Star Watch

8" x 16" oils

In college, I just about minored in astronomy. However, I got engaged and decided to be done paying tuition, so I simply finished my Bachelor of Fine Arts. I still love astronomy, and it finds its way into my art now and again.
I recently spent a week at a church Girl's Camp and I was in charge of conducting a Star Watch with the girls, teaching them constellations, etc.
Yesterday while I was sketching and thinking, a sketch very close to Star Watch came out and today I decided that it would become a painting. The meandering white line along the bottom is in charcoal and it's an oversimplified gesture of the ocean's movement. No need for details in this one.

Wow...I love it! The detail picture seems to show the painting more in greyscale than in that magnificent blue. Is the color just off in the detail picture. Really it made me feel like I was out there with you under the stars pointing out the constellations. :) For some reason the line just makes this piece. Love it.

Dang guess I should have read a little better...

Sunny, you're right, the detail pic is very gray scale. I'm not sure why the color changes so much when I zoom in, but it does. Optical vs. digital? Who knows.
I'm glad you like it! I love the line too. It's such a "live" line.

This is a really amazing painting! I love the line, too, just like everyone else:) And, wish me luck, I'm off to girl's camp tomorrow for 5 days!! Ahhh! Hopefully I'll get some inspiration like you did:)

This is such a departure for you, but I LOVE it. It reminds me of that night when we were rooming together and we laid on a baseball field and you told me what all the stars were named. *sigh* Memories.
