Cobalt

28" x 27" oils
sold - this painting is now part of Zions Bank's corporate collection and was the featured painting of the 2011 Spring Utah Valley Art Show at the Zions Bank's Financial Center, Provo, UT
I think this painting happened in response to Independence. After painting a white tulip on a fire-red background, I naturally drifted to a strong blue for my next piece. I've also been over-thinking what to paint, and feeling a bit at odds with myself. This cobalt blue, while powerful, is very soothing, so many things played behind the scenes here. I'm not sure which gallery or up-coming show this painting will end up in, but wherever it goes, it'll be wonderful. Sometimes I need to do a painting just to do the painting, with no afterthought to where it will land.
I am in love with this blue-as-heaven color that is SO not ultramarine blue, bleh. Thank goodness for an old tube of Cobalt Blue I had lying around that Schmincke Mussini makes - beautiful paint pigments!!

Buttercup

8" x 16" oils

I like how this piece ended up: the red edges on the petals, the purple with the yellow, and the sunny feeling. This piece is a nice addition to the other tulip paintings I've been doing. The series needed some purple.

Fresca

16" x 14" oils

Happy Cinco de Mayo. The title for this painting is Spanish for "fresh." I was listening to Spanish guitar music while doing this painting, and the colors in the painting remind me of berries, limes, and the freshness of summer drinks.
I'll think I'll go have some lemonade.
